善通寺交通安全祈祷殿
真言宗総本山善通寺は、弘法大師空海の生誕地として知られる誕生院である。生誕より1250年にあたる記念事業として、交通安全祈祷殿を計画することとなった。
弘法大師空海は、若くして遣唐使に選ばれ、難航の船旅を無事終え仏教経典や土木技術などを伝えた。難航の旅を乗り越えたことから、交通安全の守護として信仰があり、四国八十八ヶ所霊場巡りでは、「同行二人」とかかげ遍路する姿が見られるが、それは弘法大師と一緒に旅をしているという意味を表す。
「南無大師遍照金剛」とは、大日如来の金剛が世に満遍なく行き渡らせるという意味を持つ。軒天の放射貼りはそれをモチーフにデザインしている。
唐より伝来した技術の一つに土木技術がある。土木版築の技術を伝えた一人が弘法大師空海だという謂れもある。この建築に採用している版築工法は、コンクリート廃材に墨汁を混ぜ、黒染めに近い状態でもう一度硬化させる工法を選択した。これは、弘法大師が書道の達人であったこと、また仏法の輪廻転生になぞらえコンクリート廃材でもアップサイクルさせることができるという意味を込めている。
Fire station for headquarters branch
Zentsuji Temple, the headquarters of the Shingon sect, is the birthplace of the Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi Kukai. As a part of the 1,250th anniversary project of his birth, the construction of the Traffic Safety Prayer Hall was planned.
Kobo Daishi Kukai was chosen as an envoy to Tang China at a young age and successfully completed the difficult sea voyage, bringing back Buddhist scriptures and civil engineering techniques. Because he overcame such difficult journeys, he is worshiped as a guardian of traffic safety. In the Shikoku Pilgrimage of the 88 sacred sites, pilgrims are often seen carrying banners inscribed with "同行二人" (Dogo Ninin), symbolizing that they are traveling with Kobo Daishi.
The phrase "南無大師遍照金剛" (Namu Daishi Henjo Kongo) signifies that the golden light of Dainichi Nyorai (Mahavairocana Buddha) pervades the world. The radial ceiling design of the hall is inspired by this concept.
One of the technologies brought back from Tang China was civil engineering. It is said that Kobo Daishi Kukai was one of the pioneers who introduced the technique of tamped earth construction in Japan. The construction of this hall employs a modernized version of this technique, incorporating black ink into recycled concrete debris to create a darkened, hardened material. This represents Kobo Daishi's mastery of calligraphy and the Buddhist concept of reincarnation, symbolizing the upcycling of materials.
